For a decade, people across the world have shared green hearts to raise awareness for climate action. Here’s how you can get involved in 2025.
Happy belated Valentine’s Day to all of our supporters, our heart is dedicated to those across County Durham, and the world, who work hard and make small changes to improve our environment. Valentines’ day is a romantic holiday, but it is also a day to share love with all of your loved ones. But in 2025, our one true love is our Earth, and it needs our care.
The Climate Coalition
“Our vision is for a country and a world where children walk to school breathing fresh air instead of dangerous fumes, and where their parents think about the future with hope instead of fear.”
Led by a small team, they aim to share campaigns that unite people across the UK and spread the word and importance of climate change action. The Climate Coalition have worked hard to spread the message and connect with those who want to do more for the environment.
They have arranged multiple campaigns including Show the Love, taking place annually in the month of February, and Great Big Green Week, which comes up in early June.
Show the Love
Show the Love is a climate focused campaign that has been dedicated to raising awareness for the last 10 years throughout the month of February. Hosted by the Climate Coalition, they have grown a loving community of people across the country, and even the world, who craft green hearts to show their passion for climate action.
The campaign started in 2015 with A Simple Love Poem, familiar faces bring Shakespeare’s Sonnet number 18 to life in a short film that celebrates our world. The poem inspired people from every corner and all walks of life across the United Kingdom embraced the green heart to raise awareness to climate action and protecting our beloved earth. Since then, over a million green hearts have been made and shared to bring climate change to the attention of governments, businesses, neighbours, friends and family.
So, how can we get involved?
Make something green
A key tradition of Show the Love is crafting a green heart to show your support for this campaign and our environment. To do this sustainably, you could try:
- Crafting with care: Use recycled or leftover paper to make a green heart.
- Reuse with Love: No paper at the moment? Instead create something lasting by upcycling old fabrics into a patchwork heart. You could even DIY a pillow or blanket filled with green hearts.
- Baking with passion: Make green heart-shaped cookies or cakes, or try the Climate Coalition’s recipe for green heart macarons for something unique.
- Share your heart: Snap a photo of your creation and spread the love on social media with #ShowTheLove2025. Make sure to include why you are taking part and what your creation represents to you.
Share your story
People empower other people. It is important that we shout out our action, big or small, to show everyone the difference we can make when we work together. Show The Love is a perfect opportunity to shout out your achievements and inspire others to take part in the campaign.
Consider what it is that encourages you to take action? Is it the people and places you love? is it the local nature you see daily? is it the news stories from across the world? Whatever it is that inspires you, take this opportunity to write, photograph or draw, film, sing or dance about your experience with climate change and what you are doing to make a difference.
You can share your story on social media using #ShowTheLove2025. The Climate Coalition also will hand select a collection of stories which will be displayed on their green heart wall.
We also love to hear your stories, you can contact us at any time to share your story with us, on our Climate County Durham Facebook page. We know a lot of people are doing wonderful things in their homes, gardens, adapting their lifestyles to help the environment and we want to hear and share more of these examples. So please, if you have a story (even if it is your cycle journey or how you’ve adapted something small in your daily routine) get in touch.
Every action counts. By sharing your green heart or your sustainability journey, you can inspire others to take their own steps toward a greener future.
