New College Durham is taking action to educate students and staff on climate change and sustainability.
Climate education is important, and we have a constantly changing world so the need for it is growing even more. Most lessons on climate change are centred around recycling and renewable energy, but what most do not know is that climate change is so much more than that.
This is why New College Durham is hosting a knowledge sharing event just for their students and staff. This event is hosting stalls with many different green employers, green businesses and any other organisation with sustainable practices and green visions. This gives students and staff an opportunity to chat one on one with the experts, talk about specific subjects and learn all about what interests them and how they can help with the climate emergency.
Why are knowledge sharing events so useful?
Climate change is not just one subject, it covers a vast range of topics and not one person can know everything. Knowledge sharing events encourages many different individuals with different areas of expertise that are happy to share their knowledge to educate others. It gives everyone a chance to chat and learn from one another on a personal basis.
Having many different experts and organisations gives individuals an option on who they would like to talk to, meaning they can explore what topics they find interesting and learn all about something they love, for example a student might not be interested in recycling as a topic in a lesson, but at a knowledge sharing event they could learn more about the natural environment and how it is affected by the changing world, or chat to a local green café and learn how to run a green business or the effects food has on climate change.
These events are more than just informative sessions; they’re interactive experiences. Attendees can participate in various activities, play games, and even take home some goodies. These encourage individuals to interact with stallholders and offering hands-on experiences. It can make learning more enjoyable and naturally individuals will find themselves more interested in the topics being discussed.
Importance of climate education
Education and sharing knowledge are key in tackling climate change together. By working with our communities, partners, and staff, we can spread awareness and give people the tools they need to make a difference. Across County Durham there are amazing efforts being made to educate everyone, however there is still a lot of confusion out there about climate change, fuelled by misinformation and denial. That is why it is important to reach out to different groups in different ways, whether this is through school lessons, knowledge sharing workshops, events or digital messages. With continued education and sharing what we know, we can empower everyone to play a part in creating a more sustainable future.
The New College Durham event is only open to their staff and students; however this is not a missed opportunity as across County Durham there are many different events and workshops that you can take part in to learn more and get involved. Or as an alternative you could consider organising your own event to encourage your local town and area to learn more and take action. If this is a direction you decide to take, feel free to contact us at ClimateCountyDurham@Durham.gov.uk and we can explore ways we could possibly support with along with sharing your event on our climate related platforms.
