ReFuse Restaurant Night: Food For The Planet

Thu 01 Sep 2022 - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm REfUSE Cafe 143c Front Street Chester-le-Street DH3 3AU

REfUSE’s ethical supper club, with a twist this time: serving a “carbon costed” menu.

About this event

We all know we need to work to reduce our impact on the environment, but did you know that the food we eat accounts for up to 37% of greenhouse gas emissions? Our food choices are at the heart of climate and ecological emergencies. So join us as we serve up a tasty meal with a difference – a menu created with food that would otherwise have been destined for landfill, and costed according to each dish’s carbon footprint.

For each menu option, the carbon emissions have been calculated and converted into car miles equivalent – you pay £1 per car mile. We hope this will not only be a delicious evening, but also spark conversation by showing us the true cost of the food we eat. We’ll have information about the evening available to help spark your thoughts, including how we calculated the costs.

How much?

We ask for a booking fee of £5 per person, then on the night you can expect to pay between £5.86 and £24.10, depending on what you order – the menu and costs will be sent to you in advance.

We will have a soft drinks and mixers available to purchase on the night, guests can bring their own alcohol.

This restaurant night has been developed in partnership with Durham County Council’s Low Carbon Economy Team and Sustain.

Who’s cooking?

REfUSE’s founder and director, Nikki, will be in the kitchen for this one: cooking a summery and delicious menu. Including blue cheese, pear and walnut salad or fresh tomato bruschetta for starters, asparagus risotto or melt-in-your-mouth chicken Marbella for mains, and pavlova for dessert – and lots more. As always there will be gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.

How do I book?

Book through the Facebook or Eventbrite event. Please email info@refusedurham.org.uk if you have any issues or questions with your booking. You can also book at the cafe in person during our normal opening times.
