The end of July is fast approaching, but there’s still time to get involved
Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July is a month-long campaign that is dedicated to raising awareness to and reducing plastic waste across the globe. The campaign was launched in 2011 and quickly grew to be a worldwide event. After just six years the campaign developed into the Plastic Free Foundation as an independent and non-profit charity to support their growing audience of participants and develop the campaign.
“Plastic Free July® is a key initiative of the Plastic Free Foundation that allows us to work towards our vision of seeing a world free of plastic waste.”
The results speak for themselves, and you can see the amazing impact this campaign has achieved from the Plastic Free Foundation’s 2022 campaign report.
Plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental problems we face across the world. Single use plastics are used every day and up to 90% of plastic that is used is not recycled or disposed of correctly. Without being recycled these plastics end up in landfill and can take hundreds of years to decompose.
Did you know that across the world, an astonishing one million plastic bottles are bought every second? And in addition to this, the average person in the UK uses approximately 200 bags per year.
How you can help
To reduce plastic waste, you just have to do that. Lowering the amount of single use plastic items that you buy and switching them out for reusable or biodegradable options makes a big difference.
There are thousands of plastic-free alternatives, replace your single use plastic bottles for metal water bottles or flasks, wrap your food with beeswax wrap instead of plastic, switch from disposable nappies, wipes and pads to reusable or biodegradable, and the best part is that it can work out significantly cheaper.
According to UK business, Cheeky Wipes, the average household spends up to £825 on disposable nappies over two years (per baby), and that’s not including things like wipes and nappy bags. However, switching to reusable nappies costs £515.25, saving you hundreds of pounds, with the potential of saving even more if you reuse them with future children. So not only will you be helping the environment, but you’ll be also helping your budget too.
To do your bit for the environment you can sign up to our single use plastics pledge, and take the challenge with Plastic Free July.
If we do not cut down on plastic waste it will cause further damage to our environment, polluting our planet and continue to be a growing threat for wildlife. Our marine life are the biggest victims of plastic waste as it floats in our oceans, in some cases suffocating animals and damaging their habitats.
Join us in taking part in plastic free July and make lifetime changes to reduce plastic waste protecting our environment.
