2025 has well and truly landed at our feet, glancing back at successes – what can we do to keep the momentum in our carbon reduction efforts and continue to protect our environment.
As we have stepped in to 2025 , we look back at the past and how much has been achieved over the past year and beyond. It’s a well known fact that time moves very quickly and we must continue our efforts. We are committed as an organisation to reach net zero by 2030 with an 80% carbon reduction to our emissions, as well as working with partners, residents, and communities to achieve a carbon neutral County Durham by 2045.
Whilst there have been many notable achievements in 2024 across the world, County Durham have also made some huge progress in the last year.
In 2024 we launched the third instalment of our Climate Emergency Response Plan. This is our document that details of our joint efforts and progress in our goal for County Durham to reach net zero by 2045. The plan provides a comprehensive look at everything you need to know about different themes within climate change, how we are dealing with them from a council and county-wide perspective, and an action plan of more than 230 actions detailing our ongoing projects.
Last year we also won a national climate change award. Investors in the Environment Awards awarded us in the Best Carbon Reduction category. A very well-deserved recognition to everyone across County Durham who has took part in, supported, and worked on the reduction of 64 percent of carbon emissions since 2009. You can read more about this on the Durham County Council website.
And let’s not forget the huge achievement of ongoing support and efforts from you, residents, businesses, and communities. Noting the decarbonisation efforts across our county that are resulting in a lower carbon footprint for homes, schools, businesses, and community centres.
Every step we take together is one step closer to our net zero goals and a healthier and thriving environment.
So besides new year’s resolutions, what commitments and pledges can you make this year to make a difference to the environment?
Throughout the year there are many opportunities to take part in the fight against climate change, weather this is a new year resolution you are planning on taking up, or just a one-time thing you want to try out, any amount of effort to reduce carbon emissions is a big step to saving our planet.
Try taking a pledge in 2025. You can sign our Single Use Plastics Pledge, where you commit to cutting down on single-use plastics by adopting sustainable alternatives like reusable bottles, bags, and containers. Or, consider signing our Climate Change and Carbon Reduction Pledge to commit to taking action to lower your carbon footprint.
